Butuan City is a nice gateway to both Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur.
I have been to Butuan twice. Back in 2011, my friends and I flew here to get to Surigao del Sur, home of Enchanted River, Tinuy-An Falls, and Britannia Group of Islands. We were just transiting in this city back then.
The second time, I was with my Swedish Bf and we were heading to Bucas Grande in Surigao del Norte. We commuted all the way from Malaybalay City, Bukidnon to Butuan. That means 3 hours bus ride from Malaybalay to Cagayan de Oro. From CDO to Butuan, that was another 6 hours.
If we headed to our island in Bucas Grande on the same day, that will be an additional 3 hours bus ride then a one-hour boat ride. It will be way too much for us. This is why we had to make a pitstop and spend overnight in Butuan.
When we arrived in Butuan, all we wanted to do was eat and collapse in our room. As much as possible, we liked things to be hassle-free. This is the reason why we booked the Watergate Hotel because they have free pick up from the bus terminal.
Arriving at Watergate was like arriving in an oasis. Although it is located in a concrete jungle, the hotel will make you feel like you are in a tropical island resort. When we got there, they even gave us a welcome drink.
Since I knew that we will be exhausted after the long journey, I made sure that the place that we will be crashing is comfortable. Booking a room in this hotel was one of the best decision we have made on our trip. Our room smelled fresh, looked clean and was well illuminated. Its bed will make you want to sleep right away.
My only comment is that their room is not soundproof. I could hear people talking by the corridor (not even shouting). Not to mention, the noise that was coming from their function rooms was disturbing. Other than that, we were happy with our sleek and stylish room.
We celebrated our arrival over sushi, cocktails, and fried ice cream at their Lime and Zest Kitchen. I was amazed by their wide array of Filipino, Asian, and Western selections. Everything that we ordered was available. We didn’t hear the waiter say, “out of stock Ma’am/Sir” so thumbs up about that.
They are very generous when comes to food proportion. It was funny because their sushi was under the category of bite-size and was too big to be bite-size. I was so full after one order of sushi.
Just a step from the hotel is a building with a 24-7 convenience store, clinic, spa, coffee shop, restaurants, salon. Everything you need is just there.
Our short stay here was so convenient, and restful. I am glad we have chosen this place as our official hotel in Butuan City.
Heading to Butuan City? Book a room in the Watergate Hotel and you will never regret it.
